Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique technique used to reduce swelling (lymphedema) that helps move lymph fluid from swollen areas.

Manual lymphatic drainage belongs to medical massage and is performed by a specially trained physiotherapist

Your lymphatic system is like a drainage network that moves fluid throughout your body. When you have lymphedema, that system isn’t working properly, so fluid backs up and causes swelling. Lymphatic drainage massage stimulates the healthy parts of your lymphatic system to pick up the extra fluid and move it out of the swollen area. There are different techniques of manual lymphatic drainage, e.g. according to Voder, Foeldi technique and others. They are similar, with certain differences in massage movements.

Various diseases can disrupt the drainage of lymphatic fluid. As a result, tissue swells and lymphedema develops. Manual lymphatic drainage can be used in these cases to improve drainage and reduce swelling.

One of the most common causes of lymphedema is the treatment of breast cancer!

2. When does manual lymphatic drainage help?

Manual lymphatic drainage can be used for all conditions associated with impaired lymphatic drainage.

It is most commonly used in the following conditions:

1. Primary lymphedema caused by diseases of the lymphatic system

2. Swelling of the arm or leg after surgical treatment or removal of lymph nodes in the treatment of breast cancer or gynecological operations

3. Lipedema

3. How is lymphatic drainage performed?

It’s very different from a traditional massage.

Instead of deep pressure on your muscles, lymph drainage massage uses light, gentle strokes and rhythmic movements on your skin. The pressure is so light it might not even feel like a massage at first.

Manual lymphatic drainage is carried out as part of several consecutive treatments. The frequency and duration of individual treatments are adjusted to the individual needs of patients. In most cases, the treatment lasts between 20 and 45 minutes.

Manual lymphatic drainage is most often used together with other therapeutic methods and is an integral component of lymphedema treatment. MLD is a core component of Complete Decongestive Therapy, which is the gold standard treatment for lymphoedema.
